More Common Questions About Senior Care

What is the difference between assisted living and supportive living in Illinois?

Assisted living and supportive living offer similar daily care — help with bathing, dressing, medication, and meals — but supportive living is an Illinois Medicaid program for income-qualifying adults age 65 and older (or 22–64 with a physical disability). Traditional assisted living is private-pay. Both provide 24-hour staffing in apartment-style residences.

What is the difference between independent living and assisted living?

Independent living is maintenance-free apartment housing for active seniors who don't need daily assistance — meals, housekeeping, and social activities are included, but personal care is not. Assisted living adds daily help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and other personal care needs while preserving as much independence as possible.

How do I know what level of care my aging parent needs?

Watch for changes in daily routines. Difficulty with bathing, dressing, or managing medications signals a need for assisted living. Memory loss that affects safety — wandering, confusion, missed appointments — points to memory care. If your parent is healthy and mobile but tired of home upkeep, independent living is a good fit. A care advisor can help assess.
